Swimming & Diving: Cards lose by five points to Storm

The Alexandria boys swimming and diving team battled with the flu and the Sauk Rapids-Rice Storm in a home meet on Thursday night.

“The team would not allow the absence of senior captain Nic Chromey and Spencer Lindley affect their performances,” Cardinals head coach Kathy Walker said.

The team grabbed numerous season and lifetime bests but failed to beat the Storm, falling in a 95-90 finish.

Junior Patrick Chromey had one of those season bests in the 200 yard freestyle race. Chromey landed a first place finish, out touching second place by .04 seconds. Chromey also won the 100 yard freestyle event.

Senior captain Jordon Baas grabbed a season best time in the 50 yard freestyle with a first place finish in 23.23. Freshman Garrett Maras came in fourth in that event with a lifetime best of 24.83. Junior Geoffrey King earned a lifetime best with his 25.79 finish.

The 200 yard freestyle relay team of Baas, Maras, eighth grader Nicolas Welle, and Chromey and the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Baas, senior Zach Dummer, junior Nick Olson, and Chromey featured some swimmers that aren’t normally on the A relays, but both teams took first place.

Dummer swam a lifetime best race in the 100 yard backstroke and won the event by less than half a second (58.91).

King earned a lifetime best with a third place finish in the 100 yard butterfly (1:03.61). Freshman Ethan Johnson took second in the 100 yard butterfly in 1:02.95.
