Softball: DL’s Prussia ties state record in win over Cardinals
The Alexandria softball team was on the wrong side of history on Thursday night as Detroit Lakes won a 15-9 Section 8AAA match-up on its home field.
In the process, Lakers’ standout sophomore Laura Prussia tied the single-game state record for most home runs in a game with four. She finished the night 5-for-5 with five runs and six RBIs.
“Laura puts a lot of time into softball; she is a naturally gifted athlete,” Lakers head coach Phil Kirchner said in a story for DL-Online. “When people with talent work that hard in the weight room, after practice, and in the classroom, good things happen. Laura is a 4.0 student and just has a natural, powerful swing. She is so easy to coach and does anything I ask her to. I give a lot of credit to her and her hard work, however her dad and sisters really push her to excel.”
The Cardinals (2-7) could not hold down a Detroit Lakes (9-5) team that has now scored 42 runs in three straight wins. Emily Harris and Kendra Hardy both pitched for Alexandria, combining to allow 12 earned runs as the Lakers pounded out 18 hits.
The Cardinals got plenty of offense of their own with 10 hits, including two home runs. Paige Honkomp had one of those homers as she added a double to finish with three RBIs. Calley Richardson also homered and finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.
