The Alexandria girls soccer team fell to 0-2 on Saturday as section foe Detroit Lakes took advantage of its home field and won a 3-0 contest.

It was the second straight win for the Lakers and second straight shutout for senior goalkeeper Payton Carlblom and the DL defense.

Senior midfielder Lily Burnside had the lone goal of the first half Saturday after taking a pass from junior Nicole Swanson and scoring over Cardinal keeper Sophia Vinje.

Junior Anna Jones and Swanson crashed the net, forcing Vinje to scramble to try to control the ball midway through the second half providing an excellent scoring opportunity in the goal area.

Jones rifled a shot that bounced straight down from the center of the crossbar allowing Swanson to chest the ball into a wide open net for a 2-0 lead.

Two minutes later, Jones got loose on a pass from senior Ava Steinmetz and roofed a shot to the top corner for the final goal of the game.

Corner kicks were even at three for each team.

Alexandria outshot DL 23-19, but had difficulty threatening the Laker net.

Carlblom’s experienced play was outstanding in net as she ranged around the box to snuff out the Cardinal attack, not allowing second-chance opportunities.

Carlblom has started in net since the 2014 season. She made 17 saves Saturday to post her second shutout of the year in a rematch of DL’s opening round playoff victory last season.
