Baseball: Silverstreaks falter late, fall to third-ranked Pierz
The Osakis baseball team faced a challenging opponent in No. 3 Pierz on Thursday. They led 1-0 for most of the game but couldn't hang on, as the Pioneers scored two in the sixth and three in the seventh to take a 5-1 win.
We competed well against the No. 3-ranked team in the state," Streaks head coach Shad Schmidt said. "Pierz is a great team and they made adjustments to Jeff (Piekarski) and the ump's strike zone and broke through in the sixth. We played well, really. We just didn't get enough offense going. It was a good test for us going into playoffs next week."
Piekarski got the start on the mound for Osakis, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits and two walks and striking out two over six and one-third innings. Isaac Infanger picked up the last two outs, allowing a walk and striking out one.
The Silverstreaks scored their lone run in the first inning when Logan Hartshorn and Zach Weir had back-to-back two-out singles and Carter Rost followed with an RBI single to score Hartshorn.
The loss drops Osakis to 11-6 on the year, and the finished 7-5 in Section 6AA play. The Streaks will be in the middle of the pack in the 6AA-West Subsection Tournament, while Pierz (17-1, 6-0 section) will get the top seed in the East.
