The West Central Area girls were fourth (59.50) and the boys were third with 106 points.

It was an overall dominant meet by the Osakis girls as they won by a total of 31 points over second-place Holdingford.

“This was the first meet where we got a good look at what our team is capable of,” head coach Lee VanNyhuis said. “Long Prairie and Holdingford are both very good teams. We know both of them will be right there with us at True Team and at conference.”

Hannah Szech got the Osakis girls going with a first-place finish in the 100-meter dash in a time of 13.21 before adding a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash. The Silverstreaks once again performed well in the relays, winning the 4x100 and taking second in the 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800.

Kayla Sorenson added first-place finish in the high jump for Osakis with a leap of 5-02. Abby Stroup was first in the long jump (15-02) and Alexa Hoffarth won the triple jump (32-02.50) to help Osakis to the win. Hoffarth also broke her own school record in the pole vault (8-00).

West Central Area’s first-place finishes came from Annabelle Haarstad in the shot put (32-10) and the discus (100-08). Osakis’ Jessica Bliese was also second in both of those events.

Grant Backes got a first-place finish for the Osakis boys in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:09.57. Brady Combs won the 300-meter hurdles for WCA and Dan Schack added a win in the high jump (6-02), triple jump (41-01) and the long jump (20-08.75) for the Knights.

Osakis’ Mitch Sunder took first in the shot put with a throw of 42-06, and Jared Oachs of WCA won the discus by more than a foot with his toss of 121-04.

“I liked how Grant ran the 800,” VanNyhuis said of Backes. “He got after it in the first lap, setting himself up to win the race. He followed the race plan, and it worked. Mitch continues to be at the top in the throws. Once we back off in the weight room, we expect another surge from him. I really liked the effort and focus the guys had today.”
