Seven run first inning pushes Osakis softball to victory

The Osakis softball team won its second straight game Tuesday afternoon thanks in large part to a seven run first inning against Minnewaska on the road.

The Silverstreaks scored seven runs before the Lakers even had a chance to bat in the game, and the run support was more than enough for starting pitcher Amber Giese in a 10-2 victory. Head coach John Stigman said the team used some clutch hitting to build the early lead.

“We swung the bat,” Stigman said. “Everything we had we knocked in.”

Osakis picked up 21 hits in the game, and five of those came from second baseman Katie Anderson. The 5-for-5 performance tied a school record as she collected a double and an RBI in the process. Alecia Kaelke picked up her first career homerun with a solo shot in the second inning. She finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Giese pitched all seven innings, spreading out nine hits for only one earned run. After the game she said the Lakers keyed in on her fastball towards the end of the game, but she was able to get out of a couple jams by keeping her pitches down in the zone.

“I knew some of them caught on to some of my pitches and caught on to the fastball,” Giese said. “Otherwise I felt I kept them low and kept going strong.”

The next game for the Silverstreaks will be Monday at home against Sauk Centre.
