Osakis wrestlers win Park Region title

An indication of the kind of strides the Osakis wrestling team has made this season came on Saturday as the Silverstreaks surprised the Park Region field by taking home the conference title.

0 Talk about it

Osakis dropped duals to top teams in the conference, such as United North Central and West Central Area, earlier in the season. The Knights actually beat Osakis 32-30 just one night before the conference championships, but the Silverstreaks saved their best for Saturday as they beat both those groups with a team score of 158.5.

That was just in front of UNC with 156 points and New York Mills with 155 points. West Central Area took sixth in the tournament with 111 points. Prairie Valley was last out of the 10-team field with 42 points.

Osakis was well represented with seven individuals wrestling in title matches on Saturday. The Coyer brothers were two of those as Trenton got things going with a championship at 113 pounds. He beat Jeremiah Harper from New York Mills in a 6-3 finals match.

Brendon Coyer wasn’t to be outdone. He also won a title at 120 after beating Miguel Ambriz of LPGE in the finals 3-0. Colton Waldvogel was the next Osakis wrestler to compete in a title match as he took second after falling to Tommy Tellers of UNC at 132 pounds in a 12-1 match.

Up next was Ryan Engfer for the Silverstreaks. He brought home their third title of the day by outlasting Creg Donabauer of LPGE in a 3-2 title match at 138 pounds. Nils Hagen got to the championship at 182 pounds before falling 11-2 to Kyle Lange of Royalton-Upsala.

Tyler Spanswick earned his way to the title match with an exciting pin of West Central Area’s Hunter Fick in the semifinals. Fick held a big lead in that match before Spanswick turned the tide by pinning him in 3:43 for the win.

Fick went on to take third at 195, while Spanswick finished second after falling to Tyler Petron of NYM in the title match. Osakis’ Peter Hagen also took second on the day after falling short in the title match at heavyweight to Dalton Baker of Bertha-Hewitt Verndale.
