Osakis improves to 10-0 in Prairie Conference play

After West Central Area hung around for most of the contest, the Osakis girls’ basketball team used big games from Annalise Savageau and Brooke Sorenson to pull away for a 68-55 victory at home on Thursday.

Savageau led Osakis with 24 points and Sorenson also scored 17 as the Silverstreaks picked up its 13th consecutive victory. Abby Van Kempen scored 20 points to lead the Knights’ offense while Holly Van Kempen finished with 15

Heading into the game, WCA and Osakis were the top two teams in the Prairie Conference standings. WCA held a 5-1 record in the conference and Osakis was 9-0.

Osakis led 41-28 at halftime, and after building nearly a 20 point lead in the second half the Knights cut the deficit back to only eight with four minutes remaining. But from there foul trouble started to take over and the Silverstreaks’ offense proved to be the difference.

“They had one loss coming in, to us the first time, so you knew it was going to be a battle,” head coach Pat Kalpin said. “They’ve been improving and playing well.”

WCA tried to use its size advantage to stay with Osakis in the game. Abby Van Kempen and Holly Van Kempen are both taller than all but two of the players on the Silverstreaks’ roster, and they were able to use that size to score in the paint.

“They played a lot better than the first time they played us,” Savageau said. “They were able to use their post.”

Osakis moved to 14-1 overall with the win Thursday. The loss dropped WCA to 8-3.
