UNC drops Osakis on the road

The Osakis football team held an early lead but was unable to continue scoring on offense in a 22-14 loss to United North Central in Menahga.

Twice in the second half the Silverstreaks marched the ball into UNC territory but failed to score. Head coach Bill Infanger said the ballgame could have been very different if the Silverstreaks had converted their long drives into touchdowns.

“Two different drives and eight plays [near] the goal line we had opportunities to punch the ball in and make this a different game, and we were unable to do so,” he said. “That was the difference in this one.”

The Silverstreaks scored on their second drive of the game to take an 8-0 lead when quarterback Brandon Giesler threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Joey Kotek.

But UNC responded by scoring a touchdown on a third and long screen pass. They failed on the conversion try to keep the score at 8-6.

The Silverstreaks scored on their next drive when Giesler threw another touchdown pass to Lane Berberich.

UNC evened the score late in the first half on a rushing touchdown and the two teams were tied 14-14 at halftime.

In the second half, Osakis twice had the ball inside the UNC five yard line but could not score.

After UNC scored in the fourth quarter, Osakis drove the ball down the field with less than four minutes left in the game but was stopped on a fourth down at the UNC two-yard line. From there the home team ran out the clock for the win.

Despite losing on the road, Infanger said the Silverstreaks are becoming healthy and have been showing more effort as the season continues.

“As a team we are on the right track,” Infanger said. “We are starting to get some players back from earlier injuries and we are getting stronger every week.”

The Silverstreaks are now 3-3 this season. They will play their final home game of the season tonight, Friday, against Long-Prairie-Grey Eagle.
