Legion baseball: Osakis wins home tournament

The Osakis Legion baseball team won its home tournament with a 2-1 record this past weekend.

Brandon-Evansville also went 2-1 but a head-to-head win for Osakis between these two teams on Friday gave Osakis the overall championship. Osakis rallied from a 6-0 deficit in that game to win 7-6 before beating Long Prairie by the same score on Saturday and falling 11-2 to the Alexandria VFW II team in the weekend finale.

"Alex threw a pretty good pitcher," Osakis head coach Gerry Hoelscher said. "That Jared Gesell is a nice pitcher. Left-handed, throws pretty hard, big kid. Even for the high school season, as is the case with most people, you get a lefthander who throws as hard as he throws, it throws kids off."

Osakis was without regulars in Drew Fearing and Brandon Giesler on Saturday. Hunter Scherr got the start against Alexandria and took the loss, going two innings, allowing three earned runs. Grayson Fortenberry was back after suffering a concussion in the state tournament. He threw one inning, allowing six runs, three earned, while striking out two.

"This Legion season, we're doing some different things," Hoelscher said. "I'm sure some people are saying, 'How did they lose to Alex?" We have a lot of our seniors who played in high school who aren't playing in Legion ball right now. We're trying some younger guys, and I'm thrilled about the experience that we're able to give the kids...we're playing kids at positions that are new to them and giving them that experience."

Cody DeWenter is getting used to playing third base for Osakis. He had two hits in the win over Brandon-Evansville and was 1-for-3 with an RBI against Alexandria.

"That's one guy, for a sophomore, he's coming up with some big hits for us," Hoelscher said. "I'm pretty thrilled with what he's doing for us."

Doug Zimmel has picked up right where he left off his high school season. He had four RBIs against Brandon-Evansville and drove in three the next day against Long Prairie. He and Drew Fearing hit back-to-back solo home runs in the comeback win over Brandon-Evansville.

Scherr also had a nice weekend at the plate, reaching base a total of six times. Included in that was the game-tying hit in the seventh inning against Brandon-Evansville. Lane Berberich then delivered a walk-off single to secure the comeback victory.
