Deer report Nov. 2: Young bucks cruising
It’s been a slow first couple days of November.
At this point, there should be some older bucks cruising and young bucks pestering does in earnest. So far, I haven’t seen much of it. The only bucks I saw on their feet the mornings of Oct. 31 and Nov. 1-2 were young bucks, and they were cruising on their own without any does.
My best activity came early in the week with a close encounter on a 3.5-year-old on Oct. 28.
I set up for an evening hunt on Nov. 1 on a spot in hill country where a point came down off the ridge and met the river, creating a great pinch point. I went in there thinking it should have some good buck sign, and it did. Plenty of rubs. A few scrapes. I set up in an awesome ground spot where an uprooted tree kept me perfectly hidden. Staying on the ground also helped me with the wind, which can be tricky when hunting those bottoms. I had deer within 10 feet of me that night that had no idea I was there, but whatever made those rubs never made its way through.
It wasn’t the way I was hoping the first couple days of November would play out. With that said, I know some guys did see movement with at least one text message verifying a great buck getting shot around Alexandria this week.
There will be more that get taken this weekend with the opening of firearm season in Minnesota. If you are one of the hunters who has some success, send me a photo and a description of the hunt to email@example.com. I’ll make sure we get you in the outdoor section of an upcoming Echo Press. Good luck to everyone hitting the woods this weekend.
