Thousands expected for trap championship in Alexandria

The Alexandria Shooting Park has held many big events over the years and will add another in June with more than 4,000 shooters and 10,000 attendees expected to be at the park for what is being called the largest youth trap shooting tournament in the world.

The youth tournament will take place over the course of five days from June 6-10. As a part of the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League, the shoot was previously known as the state tournament. They changed the name to the championship due to the newly added MSHSL’s state tournament on June 14 at the Minneapolis Gun Club in Prior Lake.

Teams must compete at the championship in Alexandria to have the opportunity to qualify for the MSHSL’s state tournament. The MSHSL clay target league has grown to include about 6,100 student athletes across the state. Alexandria, Parkers Prairie, Ashby and Brandon-Evansville all field teams in a sport that continues to grow every year.

Each team at the championship is assigned a tournament day by their class and conference designation. This allows all teams to complete their competition in novice, junior varsity or varsity divisions on a single day.
