WCA softball wins two at Morris tournament

The West Central Area softball team won two out of its three games at an invitational tournament in Morris on Saturday.

The Knights dropped the first game of the tournament 17-15 against a Class A school from Fargo, North Dakota. But WCA rebounded to win the next two games, first beating Ortonville 18-2 and then winning 7-2 over MACCRAY. Head coach Bryan Poyzer said he used the tournament as an opportunity to learn more about the team.

“We got what we wanted from the invitational,” Poyzer said. “I hoped to get Lauren (McLaughlin) a start in the opener, work on our bunting and execution, and introduce some younger players. Having said that, I also wanted to see how Doranna (Blascyk) would throw in back-to-back games. With two earned runs in 14 innings, I think she answered my question.”

Blascyk picked up victories for the Knights in the second game against Ortonville and in the consolation championship game versus MACCRAY.

WCA’s offense against Ortonville was led by center fielder Lynette Engler. She went 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple, four RBIs and four runs scored.

McLaughlin was a huge contributor in the Knights’ consolation victory. She drove in three RBIs with a bases loaded triple, part of a sixth inning that broke a 2-2 tie for good. Freshman Sheyenne Evavold also drove in the first RBI of her career in the sixth inning.
