Newcomers prevalent for WCA baseball

The West Central Area baseball team will need to find replacements for four graduated conference award winning seniors in order to improve on a 7-12 record from 2013.

All-conference senior outfielder Alex Anderson graduated last spring along with all-conference honorable mention third baseman Spencer Ilstrup, outfielder Cole LaValley and catcher Carter Duncan.

Two players who earned team awards and are back this season are senior captain Andrew Lindor, who won the team’s Cy Young Award; and sophomore Jordan Beuckens, recipient of the Knights’ Golden Glove Award.

New players are so prevalent for WCA this season that when he was asked about key newcomers, head coach Brandon Gruchow said, “We have a team full of them.”

Gruchow’s expectations for the Knights this season include earning 12 wins and picking up a victory in the first game of the section tournament. He would also like to see the team minimize its errors and play hard, smart baseball.

Competitors for the Prairie Conference title are expected to be Osakis and Browerville, and Gruchow expects New York Mills to be the Section 6A favorite.
