WCA wins Section 6A south title

The West Central Area girls’ basketball team secured the Section 6A south subdivision title in a 52-31 victory over Wheaton/Herman-Norcross Tuesday in Morris, and will now play Ada-Borup Friday for a spot in the state tournament.

The Knights secured the victory by playing strong defense in the second half, holding Wheaton to just 10 points. Head coach Beth Hill said the team started slow but liked the way it rebounded second half.

“The second half, we started slow again but then we just came on fire,” Hill said. “There was a stretch of four minutes there where it was unbelievable. I had no idea the score had gotten that far.”

After WCA lead by seven at halftime, Wheaton cut the Knights’ lead to just one point with 14 minutes in the second half. But WCA went on a run from there and never looked back. WCA senior Holly Van Kempen said the team’s press in the second half helped keep Wheaton’s offense in check.

“The first half wasn’t so good, we missed a lot of shots and a lot of inside shots,” she said. “The second half we kind of picked it up.”

Christina Kruize led the Knights with 15 points in the game, followed by Holly Van Kempen with 13 and Abby Van Kempen with 10.

Arianna Karsky led the Wheaton scoring with 14 points and Jordan Stafford finished with 13.

WCA will play Ada-Borup for the Section 6A title at 7 p.m. this Friday in Morris.
