Eight seniors lead experienced WCA roster

The West Central Area girls’ basketball team hopes a solid group of returning varsity players will propel it to an improved record in the Prairie Conference this season.

Head coach Beth Hill expects eight seniors to return to the Knights’ roster this season. This experience could give them a shot to finish near the top of the conference.

“Many teams lost a lot to graduation so it will be interesting to see where everyone lines up,” Hill said.

Last season, the Knights finished with an overall record of 8-17, including 4-9 in conference play. But they lost only two players from that team, Kelsey Hammer and McKenzie Hunter, and the returning players have worked to improve this year.

“This is a strong group with lots of varsity experience,” Hill said. “They have worked incredibly hard in the off-season and are ready for a strong year.”

The returning Knight senior letter winners include Holly Van Kempen (post/forward), Christina Kruize (post/forward), Tiana Christenson (forward/guard), Kylee Fernholz (guard), Danna Sabolik (forward/post), Amber Oberg (forward/guard), Lauryn McLaughlin (guard/forward) and Genavie Haraldson (forward/post).

Many of the Knights can play multiple positions on the floor, which Hill said can provide some depth to their lineup.

“These girls play well together,” Hill said. “They have a sense of where others are on the court and play very selflessly.”

Hill expects Osakis to be among the top teams in the Prairie Conference, and is looking for the Knights to be on top as well. She also expects WCA to compete near the top in Section 6A.
