Two WCA runners qualify for state

The West Central Area cross country teams will have one representative from both the boys’ and girls’ teams competing at the state meet on November 2 at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

Abby Van Kempen earned a spot at the state meet after finishing in seventh place at the Section 6A meet with a time of 15:43. Alex Toms will represent the boys’ team after finishing in 10th place with a time of 17:28.

Head coach John Van Kempen said both teams felt they could sneak into the top two spots at the section race to qualify as a team for the state meet. Both teams finished in fourth place, with the boys’ team finishing just eight points behind second place Long Prairie-Grey Eagle. The girls’ team finished 40 points behind second place Holdingford.

“Our kids raced their hearts out today and even though we fell short of making it to state, we couldn’t be more proud of the seasons they had this year,” Van Kempen said.
