The West Central Area boys' basketball team named Dakotah Kashmark and Drew Peterson as their team MVPs at the season-ending awards banquet recently.

Both players were also named to the All-Prairie Conference team, while Jay Zimmerman was an honorable-mention selection. Peterson, a senior, was also honored with the Hardest Worker Award and the Playmaker Award after leading the team in assists.

"Drew is a top-notch kid in every aspect of life," Knights head coach Kraig Hunter said. "His character, integrity, his dedication, work ethic and leadership are all remarkable. He represented our boys program the way we want to be represented."

Kashmark will be back next season to help make up for the loss of Peterson. The junior guard added to his co-MVP award with an award for finishing with the team's best free throw percentage. Zimmerman was the team's most improved player and the leading rebounder as just a sophomore.

Junior Alex Toms was named defensive player of the year by his teammates. Fellow juniors Jared Oachs got the Scout Award and Brady Combs took home the Mr. Hustle Award.

Peterson was the lone senior on this team, meaning the Knights should have a lot to work with heading into next winter. They finished this year with a 14-12 record overall and a 9-7 mark in the Prairie Conference. That was good for a fourth-place tie in league play.

"It was a fun and exciting season," Hunter said. "Once again, we were a tough, scrappy team that played with big hearts and we had amazing team chemistry. The guys were like a family. The players represented WCA very well and always with class. We put a hard working team on the floor every night."
