Blizzard hockey: Alexandria swept ahead of home opener this Saturday
The Alexandria Blizzard ran into two good teams in the West Division and dropped both contests in a 6-2 loss to New Ulm on Saturday and a 5-1 loss at Granite City on Oct. 5.
The Blizzard (3-4, 6 points) outshot New Ulm (2-2, 4 points) 38-35 but the Steel had more to show for it in a 6-2 win. They opened things up in the third period with three goals as Jacob Halvorson, Hunter Johnson and Corey Stormer all scored.
New Ulm had led 3-0 going into the final frame. Alexandria’s only two goals came in the third when Tanner Frerichs scored on the power play off an assist from Dylan Mattson, and Riley Scanlon scored at 17:45 with assists to Tucker Kruse and Elias Thompson.
Alexandria’s Bailey Rosch started in net and took the loss for the Blizzard after turning aside 29 of the 35 shots he faced.
It was an early deficit that got the Blizzard in trouble at Granite City, as well.
The Lumberjacks (4-1, 8 points) got goals from Noah Bissett, Zack DeBoom and Trevor Dummer to take a 3-0 lead after the first period. Daymin Dodge made it 4-0 early in the second before Dylan Giorgio got Alexandria’s only goal off assists from Brett Meister and Cole Lehmann on the power play. Brad Amundson negated that goal two minutes into the third to put the finishing touches on the 5-1 Granite City win.
Kyle Hayden started for Alexandria in this one as he turned aside 32 of the 37 shots he faced. Michael Janke was strong in net for the Lumberjacks with just one goal allowed on 29 shots faced.
The Blizzard has one more game on the road at New Ulm this Friday night at 7:10 before finally getting the shot to play in front of its home fans at the Runestone Community Center. Alexandria hosts New Ulm on Saturday at 7:10 p.m.
