Girls golf: WCA claims team awards

The West Central Area girls golf team met for team awards on May 30 with a group that developed over the season.

Head coach Kari Kreft said her players made overall improvements from the previous year, and it started with the team MVP in freshman Jessica St. Martin.

“Jessica had a fantastic season for us, consistently putting herself in position for the top spot in meets,” said Kreft. “(She) was a real leader for us.”

Junior Kate Wrolson was named most improved, and junior Libby Poyzer was voted “Shining Knight” by her teammates.

“Kate made great gains throughout the season and really shined in postseason play,” Kreft said. “...Libby can always be counted on to have a positive attitude and always finds the positive, not only in her game, but everyone else’s, as well. We really count on her to keep us all going.”

Juniors Emily Courrier and Lexi Poyzer joined the trio as letterwinners, and all five also earned Spotlight on Scholarship awards.

St. Martin qualified for the section finals to highlight the individual accomplishments, while she and Lexi Poyzer were named to the All-Quad County Conference team. Multiple individuals won medals throughout the year, and as a team, the Knights also finished second in the conference.
