Boys state golf: Alexandria storms to the front of the pack after day one

Noah Boraas

Alexandria boys golf coach Brady Swedberg said his hope for the Cardinals at this year’s state tournament was that they would be in contention going into day two.

Alexandria is more than in contention. The Cardinals are in the driver’s seat. They lead the Class AAA state tournament at Bunker Hills by three shots over Maple Grove (297) after shooting a 294 on Tuesday afternoon. St. Thomas Academy is third with a 301.

The Cardinals were led by a one-under par 71 from Noah Boraas. That’s tied for fourth individually. Hunter Rebrovich and Braeden Sladek each shot a 72, while Grant Rebrovich rounded out the scoring with a 79. Ben Dirck shot an 80 and Joe Bigger an 81 to finish off the Alexandria lineup.

The Cardinals have 18 state tournament appearances, and one team championship. That came in 2006. They will go for their second one on Wednesday back at Bunker Hills Golf Club in Coon Rapids. Bigger tees off at 12:45 p.m. on the East course, with Dirck, G. Rebrovich, Sladek, H. Rebrovich and Boraas following in order nine minutes a part after that.

CLASS AAA STATE TOURNAMENT - ROUND ONE - Alexandria - 294; Maple Grove - 297; St. Thomas Academy - 301; Elk River - 302; Stillwater - 303; Edina - 307; Waconia - 308; Northfield - 315
