Football: Minnewaska shut out in season opener
The Minnewaska football team had a tough go in its season-opening matchup with Maple Lake, falling 27-0 on the road Thursday night.
The Lakers (0-1) held the Irish (1-0) scoreless after the first quarter, but Maple Lake scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to jump ahead. The first, a 4-yard run for Zach Cargill, made for a 6-0 game following an incomplete 2-point conversion.
The deficit doubled with less than two minutes before halftime when Benn Clapp connected with Ben Goetz for an 80-yard touchdown pass. It put Maple Lake ahead 12-0, and Clapp then found Jordan Mortenson for the 2-point conversion and a 14-0 game at the half.
Cargill added another touchdown run in the third quarter from the 1-yard line, and then Goetz rushed in from 21 yards out in the fourth quarter. With an extra point and a failed 2-point conversion on the scores, the Irish had a 27-0 lead, which soon cemented into the final.
Ryan Amundson led the Lakers with 59 rushing yards on 12 carries, while Grant Jensen followed with 46 yards on four runs. Amundson also went 3-for-10 passing for 26 yards and two interceptions.
Defensively, Aaron Ver Steeg came up with an interception and a fumble recovery.
For Maple Lake, Clapp went 7-for-10 through the air for 143 yards and a touchdown, while he added 101 yards on the ground over 15 rushes.
