Cross country: Knights second at LQPV Invite

Jacob Bright

The West Central Area boys and girls cross country teams each picked up second-place finishes at the Lac qui Parle Valley Invitational on Tuesday.

For the boys, Jacob Bright finished in 16 minutes, 49 seconds to claim first place. Jack Van Kempen followed in third, while Kade Runge (sixth) and Kyle Schill (11th) also picked up top-15 finishes. It wasn’t enough to hold off LQPV, however, as the Eagles took the team title by a 13-point margin.

On the girls’ side, Teagan Nelson led WCA by finishing in fifth. Ella Van Kempen was close behind in 7th, while Lexi Bright and Brynn Fernholz followed in ninth and 11th, respectively. Kennedy Porter rounded out the group in 45th. Lac qui Parle Valley beat out the Knights by nine points for the team win.

“What we will need with both teams is to get some more depth in our lineup. It’s tough to race with only five girls,” head coach John Van Kempen said. “It’s a long season and even though we aren’t where we need to be in the end, it was a good first meet after a couple weeks of practice.”
