Cross country: Minnewaska runners aiming to build first-year program

The Minnewaska cross country teams have been reborn entering into the fall.

“Cross country was just added back to Minnewaska Schools this fall after several years of not having the program,” head coach Jennifer Johnsrud said. “We look to foster the development of a new program, improve each athlete’s performance/skill level and hope to have some individuals earn all-conference honors.”

The program wasn’t reinstated until late July, Johnsrud said, so there wasn’t much time for off-season workouts. Early in the season, Johnsrud expects to be behind teams that put in many miles over the summer, she said.

The Lakers will have three seniors, all on the boys’ side, to lead the program in Grant Hendren, Isaiah Testa and Nathan Pitzen. For the girls, juniors Ellie Danielson and Karra Hanson headline the oldest of the bunch.

“We have leadership from our track and field athletes who have experienced much success,” Johnsrud said. “We are also young and very enthusiastic about having cross country back at Minnewaska.”

The Lakers will get the season underway at 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 27, for the MACA Invitational at the Pomme De Terre Golf Club in Morris.
