The Brandon-Evansville softball team and first-year head coach Kasi Huschle return seven starters who hope to lead the Chargers toward the top of the Pheasant Conference this season.

0 Talk about it

Brandon-Evansville was 6-3 in league play a year ago and 9-9 overall. The Chargers lost the battery of pitcher Carlie Steffenson and catcher Alea Alstead, but have everyone else back from the starting lineup.

“We are a fairly young team with a lot of potential and are returning a lot of talented players,” Huschle said. “There are some big shoes to fill with the girls we graduated last year, but I am excited to see how the younger girls step up to fill those shoes.”

Captain Kinsley Randt, Megan Kokett and Sara Roers are the three seniors on this team. Randt will see plenty of time on the mound as well as first base. Kokett anchors the outfield in center field and Roers will help solidify the infield. Junior shortstop Emily Friedrich is a captain who is back to help anchor the defense up the middle.

Three other freshmen are also returning starters who hope to improve with another year of varsity experience. Carrigan Okerlund will see time behind the plate, while Kennedy Lund enters the season at first base and as a captain. Morgan Stelzer will help in the outfield. That group is part of a solid young nucleus of eight players on the roster in the freshmen and sophomore classes.

The Chargers will battle Ashby, Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley, Hillcrest Lutheran Academy, Ortonville and Wheaton-Herman-Norcross in the Pheasant Conference before entering the Section 6A tournament. Ashby won the Pheasant Conference last year, while New York Mills came out of the section to make it to the Class A state tournament.
