Chargers go quietly in Section 6A opener
The Brandon-Evansville boys will head into the off-season hoping that a year of playing without a senior on the roster will pay dividends in the future.
The Chargers wrapped up the year with a 3-21 record, and it ended with a 67-33 loss at Underwood in the opening round of the 6A South tournament on Monday night. The Rockets came in at 9-14, but they jumped out to a 39-22 lead by the break and never looked back.
“We felt good going into the game,” Chargers head coach John Holsten said. “They had some long shots early, and we had no answer for that. We just couldn’t score. We didn’t play with the energy we needed, and they played well. I don’t want to take anything away from them. They played well, and we just didn’t have an answer.”
Underwood got 22 points from Ben Field, while Adam Creek and Matt Biegler each added 15 points apiece. The Rockets shot 52 percent, hitting on 27-of-52 shots from the field.
Skyler Quinn led the Chargers with nine points. Sam Anderson was their next leading scorer with five on a night when junior guard James Huisman didn’t play because he was out with an illness.
Brandon-Evansville finished in last place in the Little Eight Conference this season after going 1-11 in league play. The Chargers were also members of the Pheasant Conference where they went 1-5 and finished fifth.
They did so with a lot of young players on the court. Brandon-Evansville had five juniors on the roster this winter with 8th, 9th and 10th graders filling out the rest. The hope from Holsten is that these young players learned something from a three-win season and use it to get better heading into next year.
“We’re hoping that’s what we did,” Holsten said. “We’re hoping that many of these guys gained some valuable experience out of this and will come back with enthusiasm to play again. We’re going to see.”
