Zimmerman leads WCA past B-E boys

West Central Area’s junior post Jay Zimmerman controlled the game on Tuesday night as he finished with 27 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Knights to a 61-41 win over Brandon-Evansville.

“Jay Zimmerman was too much for us to handle,” Brandon-Evansville head coach John Holsten said. “He’s quite a factor inside. We just couldn’t deal with him.”

The Knights used a big run through the first 13 minutes of the second half to build a 59-29 lead after being up by just 11 at the break.

“Our guards Dakotah Kashmark, Austin Redepenning, Devin Nelson and Hunter Pfingsten did a good job of handling the ball and finding Jay Zimmerman inside or kicking to each other for some key three-point shots,” WCA head coach Kraig Hunter said. “We only had 10 turnovers the entire game, six were getting stripped in the post and four were in the last four minutes of the game, so we were pleased with the guard play.”

Zimmerman’s big night around the basket helped the Knights shoot at a 49-percent clip from the field. They hit on 23-of-47 shots and held the Chargers to just 16-of-45 from the field. Brandon-Evansville also hit just 7-of-20 free throws.

Dakotah Kashmark added 14 points, five rebounds and eight assists for WCA. Austin Redepenning had nine points.

“They can hurt you in a lot of ways,” Holsten said of the Knights. “They knock it down from outside. They penetrate and find open people and they guard well. They’re a good ball club. They’re going to be a tough out in the playoffs.”

Skyler Quinn led the Chargers with 19 points and eight rebounds but was the only one in double figures for his team. Taylor Bitzan added five points, four rebounds, three steals and one assist, while Brandon Christianson finished with seven points, two assists and one rebound.

The loss drops the Chargers to 3-16 and moves WCA to 15-5. Brandon-Evansville was scheduled to welcome in Ashby last night, Thursday, before Wheaton-Herman-Norcross comes to town tonight. The Warriors are 16-2 with their only losses coming against undefeated Battle Lake and a team from Sisseton, South Dakota.

The Knights were scheduled to welcome in Upsala last night before taking on Battle Lake at home this Saturday in a 3:30 p.m. tip.
