It wasn’t pretty, but the Brandon-Evansville girls pulled out an important Little Eight Conference win in a 38-30 game at Battle Lake.

0 Talk about it

Neither team could find the bucket almost all night as the Chargers won despite shooting 27 percent from the field (10-36). The Battlers shot 10-of-49 from the field. The end result was a Brandon-Evansville win even after the Chargers committed 15 first-half turnovers.

“It wasn’t a very artistic game,” head coach Dick Simpsons said. “It was a poor shooting night by both teams and pretty ugly offense, but a conference win, especially in Battle Lake, we’ll take that any day.”

The Chargers cut down on those turnovers in the second half when they gave the ball away just six times. They also hit 11 free throws in the game and just enough of those to hold off the Battlers in the end.

“We quit turning the ball over in the second half,” Simpson said. “That was the big key. Then we hit some shots and made some free throws.”

Mariah Hansen saved the Chargers by scoring more than half their points. The junior had 20 points and Carrigan Okerlund added 11. Emily Friedrich finished with four points but also grabbed 11 of her team’s 29 rebounds.

The win also helped the Chargers keep pace in the Little Eight Conference. Parkers Prairie beat Hillcrest Lutheran Academy on Tuesday night, so both Brandon-Evansville and the Panthers are 7-1 at the top of the LEC.

The Chargers were scheduled to be at Graceville last night, Thursday, before welcoming in Rothsay tonight, Friday. They will then travel to Concordia College in Moorhead to take on a 13-6 Hawley team on Saturday at 6 p.m.
