New York Mills holds off Brandon-Evansville boys

The Brandon-Evansville boys couldn’t overcome a stretch midway through the game that saw a four-point lead turn into a 12-point deficit as the Chargers fell in a 43-39 game against New York Mills on Tuesday night.

Brandon-Evansville led 16-12 at one point in the first half. That’s when the Eagles went on their run as they turned that into a 30-18 lead midway through the second half.

“That stretch really hurt,” head coach John Holsten said. “We just didn’t execute very well for a long period of time offensively.”

Skyler Quinn was the only player in double figures in the game as he finished with 17 points. Taylor Bitzan added seven rebounds, while James Huisman had eight points, five rebounds, four assists and one steal.

The Chargers shot 16-of-47 from the field. New York Mills got just 32 shot attempts, but the Eagles made half of those and also hit 7-of-11 free throws.

“We tried to make it a tempo game that was conducive to our style,” Holsten said. “They really like to go and we tried to do our best to make sure they didn’t go. We just didn’t shoot well for that stretch. We started the second half with three turnovers, and that messed up what we wanted to do. We just didn’t come out with the intensity needed and the skill needed in the second half.”

The loss dropped the Chargers to 2-12 overall, while the Eagles improved to 6-9 on the season. Brandon-Evansville was scheduled to be at Underwood last night, Thursday, before welcoming in Wheaton next Monday and Battle Lake next Thursday. The Warriors are 12-1. The Battlers are 14-0 and beating teams by almost 33 points per game.
