A solid start by former Alexandria Cardinal Shawn Krueger and some timely hitting late in the game helped the Brandon-Evansville Bluedogs earn a trip to the Resorters West title game this weekend by beating Osakis 2-1 in 10 innings last Saturday.

The two teams were locked in a 1-1 tie heading to the bottom of the 10th when Nate Meissner delivered a walk-off winner. Adam Johnson got the inning started with a double on a slicing fly ball down the left-field line. Meissner made short work of things from there as he lined the first pitch he saw to the right-center field gap for the game-winning hit.

Johnson scored both runs for the Bluedogs. He went 3-for-5 on a night when Brandon-Evansville had just six hits. Krueger and Monte Hinzmann both added singles to Johnson's big day and Meissner's game-winner.

Krueger was a workhorse on the mound through nine innings. He scattered 10 hits and two walks, one intentional, but found ways out of jams with eight strikeouts. The Bluedogs also played error-free ball behind him to help him out.

Ryan Hendrickson came on in the 10th and earned the win by throwing a clean inning. Osakis' Ben Anderson had a one-out walk, but Hendrickson retired Doug Zimmel on a strikeout before picking off Anderson for the final out of the inning.

The game went to the eighth in a scoreless tie before the Hawks took a 1-0 lead. Lane Berberich got things going with a double to left field and advanced on a ground ball off the bat of Anderson. Berberich later scored on a single up the middle off the bat of Chad Zimmel.

The Bluedogs got that run back in the bottom of the eighth. With the bases loaded and one out, Brent Meissner came through with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Johnson from third. That set the stage for extra innings as Brandon-Evansville improved to 14-2 on the season.

Osakis saw its summer come to a close as the Hawks fell to Urbank-Parkers Prairie on Sunday in an elimination game. The Bombers joined the Bluedogs in earning a trip to the Region 16C tournament with that win. These two teams will now play for seeding this Sunday.
