Resorters baseball: Bluedogs down Kensington in West playoffs

Playing their first Resorters West Division playoff game without two of their leading run producers, the Brandon-Evansville Bluedogs pulled out a close 6-3 win against Kensington last Saturday in Evansville.

The runs were hard to come by in the game as Chris Shea and Monte Hinzmann were unable to play due to minor injuries.

Matt Bruns started on the mound for the Bluedogs; his first start of the season. Bruns pitched six innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out seven batters.

Collin Modahl was originally thought to be sidelined by a minor surgery, but he pitched three innings in the game for the win.

The Bluedogs scoring began in the third inning when Lee Nelson doubled in Nate Meissner with two outs. Meissner kept the inning alive after breaking up a potential double play.

After Kensington tied the game in the top of the fourth, the Bluedogs took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly by Shawn Krueger.

Kensington regained the lead 3-2 after scoring two runs in the top of the seventh inning.

The Bluedogs tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, thanks to a Kensington miscue. Adam Johnson, who reached on a single, scored after the Kensington third baseman allowed Josh Meissner to reach on an error.

After a scoreless eighth inning by Modahl, the Bluedogs regained the lead for good in the bottom of the frame.

Brent Meissner led off the inning and later scored the go-ahead run after the Kensington pitcher attempted to start a double play but threw the ball into center field. Johnson then picked up two RBIs in the inning with a two-out single.

With the score now 6-3, Modahl finished the game by striking out two of the three Kensington batters in the ninth inning.

The second round of the Resorters playoffs for the Bluedogs, scheduled for last Sunday, was postponed due to rain. The game is now scheduled for 2 p.m. this Saturday in Evansville.
