Resorters baseball: Bluedogs wrap up West title

The Brandon-Evansville Bluedogs wrapped up the West Division title and a trip to the Region 16C tournament in the process with three straight wins to end their regular season this past weekend.

The Bluedogs finished the regular season 11-2 after beating Ashby 12-0 on July 4, Clarissa 7-3 this past Saturday and Kensington 11-10 on Sunday. That helped them finish one game ahead of a 10-3 Urbank-Parkers Prairie team in the West Division.

Brandon-Evansville needed a ninth-inning comeback against Kensington on Sunday to finish on a high note. The Bluedogs trailed 6-2 after two innings and 7-6 entering the ninth. They responded with a five-run frame that was highlighted by a bases-clearing triple from former Cardinal Shawn Krueger that made it an 11-7 game.

They needed every one of those to hold on in the bottom of the inning. Mike Bruns entered the game and gave up a lead-off single before walking the next three guys he faced. Matt Bruns entered after that as he held on for the save after pitching two innings the day before.

Brandon-Evansville had walked just 24 batters all season coming into Sunday, but the Bluedogs issued 12 free passes and hit two batters against Kensington. They overcame that by pounding out 13 hits. Kyle Bruns also threw 6 1/3 quality innings, allowing just one run on three hits and four walks. He struck out three.

Krueger finished the day with a double and a triple for three RBIs and a run scored. Chris Shea added four hits, while Josh Meissner went 2-for-4 with a walk, two runs and two RBIs.

Things went a little easier in the 7-3 win over Clarissa a day earlier after Brandon-Evansville put up five runs in the fifth inning. Josh Meissner had a two-RBI double in that inning before Lee Nelson added a three-run home run.

Clarissa got it to within 5-3 with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Bluedogs answered with two more in the seventh. Nelson added an RBI single in that inning, while Ryan Hendrickson connected for an RBI double.

That helped make a winner out of Krueger, who went six innings and allowed three runs on eight hits. He struck out four before giving way to Matt Bruns and Hendrickson, who combined to shutout Clarissa over the final three innings.

The July 4 win over Ashby was controlled by Collin Modahl, who fanned 10 in a complete-game performance. He scattered five hits and walked just one over his eight innings of work.

Brandon-Evansville gave him a 4-0 lead to work with through five innings. The Bluedogs blew things open with an eight-run eighth inning. Josh Meissner had a two-RBI single in that inning, but the decisive blow came from Hendrickson, who delivered a grand slam that ended the game by the 10-run rule.

Hendrickson finished the game with two hits, two runs, a walk and five RBIs. Brent Meissner added two hits, including a home run and two RBIs, while J. Meissner drove in two and scored twice.

It was exactly the way the Bluedogs wanted to wrap up a strong regular season. They will now turn their attention to the Resorters West playoffs. Kensington and Ashby play tonight, Friday, with the winner of that game traveling to Evansville on Saturday.

Osakis (7-6) will be at Urbank-Parkers Prairie (10-3) on Saturday, as well. The winners of Saturday's games will play each other at the high seed's home field on Sunday. The losers will also do the same.
