Bluedogs baseball: Brandon-Evansville wraps up West title
The Brandon-Evansville Bluedogs wrapped up a regular season that saw them finish as the Resorters West champions by taking their final three games of the season.
The Bluedogs celebrated the Fourth of July with a 4-2 win over Ashby after taking a 12-6 game against Long Prairie on July 3. They started that week by taking a 13-4 game over Kensington on June 30.
Adam Johnson got the win over the A's by dominating through five innings. He struck out 10 Ashby batters during that stretch and allowed just one walk and one hit.
Johnson was part of a Brandon-Evansville pitching staff that held the A's to just four hits on the night. Mike Bruns relieved him in the sixth and allowed two runs on three hits. He struck out four. Nate Meissner struck out two in the eighth before Ryan Hendrickson worked a scoreless ninth to close out the win.
The Bluedogs never trailed in the game after taking a 3-0 lead into the seventh. Ashby cut it to 3-2 but couldn't get over the hump as Brandon-Evansville added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.
Hendrickson led the offense for the Bluedogs with two hits, including a triple, to go along with a walk and a run scored. N. Meissner added a solo home run, while Brent Meissner, Monte Hinzmann and Josh Meissner all added an RBI apiece.
Things came a little easier in the 12-6 win over Long Prairie the night before. The Bluedogs erased a 2-0 deficit after half an inning by scoring five runs in the bottom of the first. They added one in the second and sixth innings before opening things up with a five-run eighth inning.
Hendrickson had another big night, going 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Nate Meissner doubled and walked four times. Johnson walked three times and scored twice, while Nolan Bartholomew and J. Meissner each added two RBIs.
That made a winner out of Kyle Bruns on the mound. He worked three innings in relief of Collin Modahl. Bruns allowed one unearned run on two hits and a walk. He struck out five before Dan Schaffer threw the final three innings.
Brandon-Evansville scored 11 runs in the final four innings to blow things open in the 13-4 win over Kensington. Nelson had two doubles and two RBIs to lead the charge. Johnson and B. Meissner both added two RBIs as well.
The three wins gave Brandon-Evansville an overall record of 13-3 through the regular season. The Bluedogs guaranteed themselves a spot in the Region 16C tournament by winning the Resorters West regular season title with an 11-2 record. They open Resorters West playoff action on Saturday at home against Ashby.
