Cardinals continue winning through section bracket

Two big innings for the Alexandria baseball team on Tuesday afternoon helped it win its second game of the day, 11-3 against St. Michael-Albertville, to continue advancing through the Section 8AAA loser’s bracket.

A three-run homerun by Parker Revering lifted the Cardinals to a four run third inning, and a two run triple by Toby Helgeson in the fourth inning contributed to four more runs. Those two innings built an 8-2 lead for Alexandria, and from there they rolled to an 11-3 victory.

After the game, Revering said he was able to turn on a fastball from St. Michael-Albertville starting pitcher Jaylen Hakes for his home run.

“It was a 3-2 count, fastball a little inside,” Revering said. “I just turned on it and I knew it was gone right away.”

Alexandria starting pitcher Mitch Thompson managed to settle down after giving up two runs in the first two innings. He ended up getting the win after pitching three innings and allowing three runs.

“I was pretty nervous at the beginning of the game, so I kind of settle down and settled into the mound,” Thompson said.

Probably the most surprising thing about Thompson’s performance is that it was his first start of the season. Head coach Russ Hinrichs said both starts by Blake Stockert and Thompson were important for the Cardinals to continue advancing in the tournament.

“You’re not going to get through the losers bracket of the tournament with guys throwing two or three innings," Hinrichs said. "The guys did a fantastic job.”

The Cardinals will now face Bemidji at 5 p.m. tomorrow in St. Cloud for the chance to play Brainerd in the finals.
