8AA track and field: Cards set record, will be well represented at state

The Alexandria girls' track team set a new section record in the 4x100 relay on the way to a state berth on Saturday at the 8AA finals in Thief River Falls.

The Cardinals' Karly Betterman, Tayler Kaufman, Madelyn Urman and Wensia Johnson won the relay in 48.74 seconds, eclipsing the old record of 49.27 set by St. Cloud Tech in 2007.

Johnson dominated the day in her events as she won the 100-meter dash in 12.14 and Urman took second to qualify for state in a time of 12.47 seconds. That duo did the same in the 200-meter dash as Johnson won in a time of 25.21, while Urman took second in 25.62 seconds.

Megan and Bethany Hasz both qualified for state in the 1,600 after doing the same in the 3,200 on Wednesday. Bethany beat her sister by .07 of a second, finishing in 4:56.10 to Megan's 4:56.17.

Betterman will be jumping at state after winning the triple jump with a distance of 36-02.75. Mitch Peck also punched his ticket to state in the 300-meter hurdles with his winning time of 39.48 seconds at the section meet.

The Cardinals will be well represened at the state meet after a big day at the finals followed up a handful of athletes punching their tickets to state at the prelims on Wednesday. John Vogeler, in his first season out for track, finished second in the long jump (21-10) to qualify for the state meet.

Bethany Hasz finished first in the 3,200-meter run in a time of 10:33.26 and Megan Hasz was right behind in second at 10:35.77 on Wednesday. JeAnna Miller did the same in the high jump with a leap of 5’2” to take second and qualify for state.

Johnson also earned her spot in the long jump at state. She leaped 18’1” in the prelims and hit that again in the finals. That was good for second after St. Cloud Tech’s Jodi Lipp hit 18-05.50 to set a new section record for the win.

The state meet at Hamline University in St. Paul will get started this Friday and wrap up on Saturday with the finals.
