The Alexandria girls’ track and field team showed some improvement from last season as it took fourth place at the Section 8AA True Team meet on Friday at Buffalo High School.

The Cardinals finished in fourth place with a team score of 717, with St. Michael-Albertville taking first with a score of 948. Brainerd took second place with a score of 799.5 and Moorhead was third with 790.5.

The fourth place finish was an improvement for the Cardinals over last season when they finished in sixth. With every competitor earning points for their team in a true team meet, head coach Meghan Orgeman-Crumb said the competition was a measure of every competitor on a team.

“True team is truly a measure of a team’s depth and competitive spirit,” she said. “Last year the girls placed sixth at the true team meet. This year our increased depth was seen as the team ended up placing fourth behind St. Michael-Albertville, Brainerd and Moorhead.”

The Cardinals picked up three first place finishes at the meet, including two from Wensia Johnson. She finished first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.62 and in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.49.

JeAnna Miller also grabbed first place in the high jump by clearing a height of 5-02.00.

Alexandria also had three athletes grab second places in the competition. Mady Urman finished directly behind teammate Johnson in the 200 meter dash with a time of 13.15, Bethany Hasz finished second in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 5:04.93 and Karly Betterman took second in the 300 meter hurdles with a result of 47.54.

Betterman and Urman also each had third place finishes in the meet. Betterman’s third place was in the triple jump with a distance of 34-00.00 and Urman’s was in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:01.46.

The 4x200 relay team of Kelby Olson-Rodel, Syri Williams, Tayler Kaufman and Johnson also grabbed second place for the Cardinals with a time of 1:50.91.
