A 5-2 win for the Alexandria boys’ tennis team over Sartell Tuesday in an away match at the Evolution Fitness Club in Sartell gave the Cardinals its first victory in the Central Lakes Conference this season.

The Cardinals swept the singles lineup and also won at second doubles to take five matches from Sartell.

“We certainly did not play our best tennis, but we did just enough to give ourselves the edge over the Sabres,” head coach Dave Ronning said. “The Sabres are a very young team and, like the Cardinals, had only one win on the season going into the match.”

Devin Crowe started the Cardinals off with a win at first singles. His two-set victory was revenge over the Sabres’ Daniel Muntifering, who defeated him last season.

“Devin is playing good tennis right now and is gaining confidence with every match,” Ronning said.

Mark Kallevig won at second singles 6-2, 6-1, and Brendan Holm returned to the singles lineup at third and won 6-4, 6-0. Valentino Grasiosa needed three sets but picked up the victory 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-1.

At second doubles, Payton Grandgenett and Andrew Storm solidified the victory for Alexandria by winning 7-6 (2), 6-4.

“Our lone doubles win came from Payton and Andrew at second doubles, where they started slow but got things figured out just in time to win the first set in a tiebreaker and capture the second set 6-4 to give the Cardinals the fourth and deciding point in the match,” Ronning said.
