Girls beat two meet records at Concordia

The Alexandria girls’ track team beat two meet records at the Moorhead Athletic Association Invite at Concordia College last Friday as the Cardinals finished fourth as a team with 86 total points.

Megan Hasz had one of those as she eclipsed the mark of 5:08.10 held by former Alexandria distance runner Jamie Piepenburg in the 1,600-meter run. Hasz finished in 5:05.80, but it didn’t quite get her a first-place finish. She finished second as Bemidji’s Jenna Truedson also eclipsed the old meet record with her time of 5:01.81.

The 4x100 team for the Cardinals also beat a meet record in that event. Karly Betterman, Tahlia Bowden, Mady Urman and Wensia Johnson teamed up to win in a time of 49.31 seconds, beating Fargo South’s old record of 51.01 set in 2008.

“This meet tends to bring some of the strongest and fastest athletes in Minnesota and North Dakota,” Alexandria head coach Meghan Orgeman-Crumb said. “So it’s a great way for our athletes to get exposed to a high level of competition early on in the season. Overall, there were some highs and lows throughout the meet for the Cardinals, which is to be expected at the first outdoor meet of the year.”

The Cardinals had a total of 17 season and personal-bests in the meet. They racked up points behind more than 20 top-eight finishes.

Johnson got things going with Alexandria’s only individual first-place finish in the 100-meter dash. The sophomore has long since established herself as one of the top sprinters in the state and she finished in 12.39 to secure the victory on Friday.

The Cardinals added three second-place finishes individually. JeAnna Miller was runner-up in the high jump with a leap of 5-03, while Betterman added a second-place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 35-02.50. That was part of a big day for Betterman, who also finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles and third in the 300-meter hurdles.

West Fargo won the team event with 134.5 points. Bemidji was second with 92 points and Moorhead rounded out the top three with 88.5.
