Cardinal boys sixth at Concordia Invitational

The Alexandria boys’ track and field team came in with a sixth-place finish out of 10 teams at the Moorhead Athletic Association Invite at Concordia College-Moorhead on Friday.

The Cardinals got 23 person bests as a group of upperclassmen continue to lead the way, and the underclassmen gain experience. Alexandria finished with 64.5 total points, while the Fargo Davies team ran away with the team title with 133.5 points.

“The team performed about as expected,” head coach Mike Empting said. “The juniors and seniors are competing very well against the competition, and the freshmen and sophomores are improving steadily and doing a great job.”

Senior Mitch Peck had another nice day with a couple top-four finishes. He was first in the 300-meter hurdles in 40.38 seconds and fifth in the 110-meter hurdles at 16.44 seconds. Fellow senior John Vogeler also had a personal-best jump of 6’0” in the high jump to take second.

Joe Gorghuber was third in the triple jump with a leap of 38’7.5” in his first time ever competing in the event. Throwers Mitchell Maday and Aaron Steidl racked up points in the shot put. Maday was second with a personal-best toss of 49’11” and Steidl took third with a throw of 49’09”.

“We are getting solid points from the senior-led throwing group and we are very competitive in the distance events,” Empting said. “Our juniors and seniors in the sprints, jumps and hurdles continue to improve and compete hard, and we are getting solid performances from our freshmen and sophomores in this group as well.”
