Alex boys' golf preview: Expectations remain high

The Alexandria boys’ golf team can often reload rather than rebuild and that should be the case again this year.

The Cardinals are coming off a sixth-place finish at the Class AAA state tournament. Juniors Lukas Bigger, Aaron Johnson and Cole Haugen are all back from that state tournament team. They will be asked to help lead the way as Alexandria tries to fill the rest of the lineup after the loss of Nick Brundell, Kyle Blank and Brady Hafdal from the lineup at state.

0 Talk about it

“I think it will be another good year for Alex golf,” 13-year head coach Rick Larson said. “Our strength is three of the returning letter winners played on the state tourney team last spring, where we had the second best team score on day two. Our weakness may be trying to find some players to fill the spots of the graduated seniors. There are about six players who could, and hopefully we can identify them early.”

The Cardinals have seniors in Brandon Bistodeau and Brady Bast, along with junior Dan Hennessey, who are returning letter winners who could slip into those roles. Larson said sophomores Jared Lind, Grant Zwilling, Chad Blank, Geoffrey Griepentrog and Kagan Foster all had good junior varsity meets a year ago and could see time on varsity this season.

Larson has won 10 CLC championships and six section titles during his tenure as the Alexandria head coach. He hopes to add another to both those lists with St. Cloud Tech, Sartell and Willmar being the teams who could stand in the Cardinals’ way of winning their second straight CLC crown.

Those four teams, along with Moorhead, should also make for another competitive Section 8AAA field come tournament time in late May at the Greystone Golf Course in Sauk Centre.
