Girls basketball: Cards welcome in DL for the 8AAA opener tonight

The Alexandria girls’ basketball team will kick off the quarterfinals of the 8AAA tournament tonight against a team the Cardinals split with during the regular season.

Alexandria is seeded fourth in the tournament and will host fifth-seeded Detroit Lakes at 7 tonight from the Jefferson High School gymnasium. The Cardinals are 18-6, while the Lakers come into the game 20-6 and winners of eight of their last 10 games.

Alexandria dominated Detroit Lakes in a 72-44 game the first time these two teams met in Detroit Lakes on December 6 for the season opener. The Cardinals hit 11 threes in the first half that night on their way to 60 points by the break. Both those numbers were school records for a single half.

It was a much different story the next time they met on February 18. The Lakers returned the favor on Alexandria’s home court in that game, beating the Cardinals 53-26. That was the least points scored of the season for Alexandria, a team that averages the second most points in the Central Lakes Conference at 62.5 per game.

The winner of Alexandria and Detroit Lakes will likely face Fergus Falls on Saturday at St. Cloud State University at 6 p.m. The Otters first have to get by eighth-seeded Little Falls tonight.

Fergus Falls enters as the top seed after being the top-ranked team in Class AAA all season. The Otters won their first 25 games before losing to St. Cloud Tech in a 61-48 game in the regular-season finale last Friday night. The Tigers are 22-3 with one of those losses coming to Alexandria on December 20.
