Girls hockey: Alex to play for the consolation title after winning 3 OT thriller

Freshman McKenzie Revering played the role of hero for the Cardinals hockey team on Thursday as she sent the Alexandria girls onto the Class A consolation title game with a goal in the third overtime against New Ulm.

That gave the Cardinals a 4-3 win at Ridder Arena after the two teams matched each other shot for shot for more than two and a half hours. Melissa Drown, Lauren Niska and Nicole Bartels also scored for Alexandria in regulation. New Ulm got goals from Erika Ries, Brook Schugel and Ali Beltz. Amy Jost got the win in goal for the Cardinals with 36 saves.

It proved to be an evenly matched game from start to finish as the Cardinals outshot New Ulm 43-39. Alexandria will now play the winner of Litchfield-Dassel-Cokato (10-18) and Proctor-Hermantown (18-10) at 10 a.m. on Saturday right back at Ridder Arena.

Check back at later this afternoon for player and coach reaction from this game.
