Card skaters win third straight

The Alexandria boys’ hockey team has followed up a two-game losing streak with a three-game winning streak after beating St. Cloud Tech 5-2 in St. Cloud on Tuesday night.

The Cardinals never trailed in this one as they outshot the Tigers 46-30. They peppered the net in the opening frame on their way to a 2-0 lead on 16 shots. Levi McFarlane got them going at 6:49 in the period before Chris Leary added another goal almost three minutes later.

Tech tried to rally in the third. Riley Bates scored for the Tigers at 2:04, but Brady Bast gave the Cardinals a two-goal lead again at 6:11. The Tigers’ Tanner Skaja scored just 39 seconds later to once again make it a one-goal game.

The Cardinals closed things out down the stretch. Alec Wosepka made it 4-2 at 11:11 before McFarlane added his second goal of the night in the closing seconds.

Sam Goetsch got the win for the Cardinals in net. He stopped 28 shots, while Tech’s Austin Althaus took the loss despite having 41 saves.

The Cardinals have one regular season game left after playing at Fergus Falls last night, Thursday. They will welcome in Willmar tonight, Friday, in a game that was rescheduled from January 28.
