Cardinals beat Northern Lakes, stop two game losing skid

The Alexandria girls’ hockey team got back in the win column on Saturday with a 5-1 home victory over Northern Lakes.

Melissa Drown scored twice for the Cardinals, netting her first goal in the first period and finishing up the scoring for Alexandria in the third period.

The other three Alexandria goals were scored in the second period by Karina Carlsen, Nicole Bartels and Kaila DeWanz. The Cardinals switched their lines up before the game to provide a more balanced scoring attack, and the move appeared to pay off.

“It was nice to come out hard tonight and get some more points up there,” Drown said. “We’ve been struggling with scoring and we moved some lines around and I think that helped us in the offensive zone tonight.”

Bailey Serum picked up the win in net for Alexandria after stopping all but one of the Northern Lakes’ shots on goal. She was happy with the way the team played in front of her.

“I felt pretty good,” Serum said. “I had a great defense in front of me today and our forwards just kept throwing it down at their net and getting goals.”

The win helped the Cardinals stop a two game losing streak. Head coach Blair Hovel was happy with the effort he saw against Northern Lakes.

“We controlled the puck better and there was a lot more communication amongst our lines,” Hovel said. “They were yelling for the puck when they were open, they were skating hard for loose pucks. It just seemed like the drive to win was there more today than it was in the last couple of games.”

The win propelled the Cardinals to a 9-7-1 record overall this season.
