Cards start 2014 with a comeback

A comeback effort helped the Alexandria girls’ hockey team start 2014 on a winning note.

The Cardinals’ winter break ended with a game in Albertville against North Wright County, and after the first period Alexandria found itself down 2-1.

McKenzie Revering scored the lone goal for the Cardinals in the first period.

But after a scoreless second period for both teams, the Cardinals jumped ahead in the third period with three goals. Kaila DeWanz and Melissa Drown both scored before Taylor Ellingson added another empty net goal late in the third period.

Head coach Blair Hovel said he noticed the Cardinals regained some of the aggressive play in the third period that they had displayed at the beginning of the season.

“We started to apply some pressure, started to get back to the game that we were playing earlier in the season,” Hovel said. “A little more aggressive, a little more jump in our feet.”

Bailey Serum picked up the win for Alexandria by stopping 16 of North Wright County’s 18 shots on goal.

Alexandria has four games on the schedule this week, starting with a make-up game Monday on the road in St. Cloud. The Cardinals also play away games on Tuesday, yesterday, against River Lakes and Thursday against Brainerd/Little Falls.

Alexandria will also host Northern Lakes at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday in the Runestone Community Center.
