Bruzek named Card girls’ soccer MVP

The Alexandria girls’ soccer team put the finishing touches on one of the best seasons in program history by handing out its awards last Monday night.

The Cardinals named Sarah Bruzek as their most valuable player after she put together an incredible senior year. Bruzek was also named Class A first team all-state, along with junior defender Anna Lee. They were the catalysts of a defense that posted 11 shutouts and finished with the best goals against average in the state.

Lee and Bruzek were two of the five Alexandria players named All-Central Lakes Conference. Anna Spanbauer, Chelsey Salto and Rachel Drew joined them on that list, while Karsen Granning, Taylor Ellingson and Emily Korkowski were honorable-mention selections.

Granning earned the Hustle Award for this team as just a sophomore. Junior Carly Dropik was named the most improved player and Maria Clark earned the Coach’s Award.

The Cardinals also recognized a big group of seniors who played their last games in an Alexandria uniform. Spanbauer, Salto, Bruzek, Drew, Madison Edmond, Rice, Clark, Ellingson, Kayla Vanderveur, Bria Nienaber and Kendra Sukke will all have to be replaced.

They leave after leading this team to a 15-3 record. That’s the most wins in program history. The Cardinals also won their first-ever Central Lakes Conference title this fall after going 12-0 in league play. They also never allowed a goal at home through the regular season.
