Alexandria's Blake Stockert made a commitment to the North Dakota State University baseball team official on Thursday after signing his paperwork to become a recruited walk-on for the Bison starting next fall.

Stockert signed in front of his mother, Carolyn, his father, Brian, and his brother, Carter, along with Alexandria baseball coaches Russ Hinrichs, Chris Koep, Jake Munsch and Kevin Engebretson. He ultimately chose the opportunity to play at the Division I level over some partial scholarship offers from a handful of Division II schools. In doing so, he will join Osakis' Drew Fearing on the Bison's roster next fall after Fearing signed with NDSU on Wednesday.

"I had like five or six different colleges that offered me a couple scholarships and a different variety that didn't," Stockert said. "I just decided that this would be the best choice, even though it wasn't the best [moneywise]. I just felt like it would be the right place to is Division I and if you can say you went Division I in something, it's a great honor. Division II isn't far away, and I would pretty much put them at the same level, but just from the start, it was the top place that I really looked at and it really never faded from number one."

The lefthander features a hard fastball that he mixes with a curveball, slider and changeup. He used that repertoire to post a 3.00 ERA with 43 strikeouts in 35 innings pitched for Alexandria this past spring. He broke onto the scene as a sophomore by posting a 1.03 ERA and 34 strikeouts in just 20 1/3 innings.

“From the first time Blake stepped on the mound as a varsity pitcher, you could see that he was different,” Hinrichs said. “Just the way the ball jumps out of his hand and as a lefty. As a coach, you’re always looking for a left-handed guy because that certainly is something different. But from the moment he took the mound, his stats speak for themselves.”

Stockert will be looked upon as a senior ace on the Cardinals' pitching staff for the 2014 season. Read more about his decision to play at NDSU in next Wednesday’s issue of the Echo Press.
