Cardinals win close one over St. Cloud Tech

The Cardinals volleyball team was preparing for St. Cloud Tech's best effort in the Section 8AAA quarterfinals, and they got it before taking a five-set victory in Alexandria on Friday.

St. Cloud Tech roared out of the gates by winning the first and third sets to take a 2-1 lead. But the Cardinals came back by taking the fourth set 25-13 and the decisive fifth set 15-11. Head coach Becky Schlichting said they prepared knowing they could see a battle from their section opponents.

"Tech played great volleyball the majority of the night," Schlichting said. "We had a lot of jitters on our side I think for this being the first round of the playoffs, and Tech had that out of their system already."

Amanda Christianson led the Cardinals with 15 kills, and Wensia Johnson also picked up 11. After the match Christianson said they were able to raise the level of energy on the court to pick up wins in the final two sets.

"We brought our energy so much and we had fun," she said. "We just hit the ball and did our passing and had good communication."

With the win, Alexandria will now play at home on Tuesday against the winner of Monticello and Detroit Lakes. That match will take place at 7 p.m.
