Bruzek, Lee named all-state

Alexandria goaltender Sarah Bruzek and defender Anna Lee were both named to the Class A All-State team by the Minnesota State High School Soccer Coaches Association.

BruzekLeeBruzek allowed just seven goals in 16 games through the regular season for a state-best 0.437 goals-against average. Lee helped her out by directing the defense in front of her as one of the best Class A defenders in Minnesota.

“We had a fantastic season and a big part of that was our defense,” Alexandria head coach Tom Roos said. “I think the all-state committee recognized that Sarah had the leading goals-against average in the state at Single A. I think part of Anna Lee being recognized was the fact that as our conference coaches ranked the top players in our conference, they recognized Anna Lee as being among the very top field of players. That goes a long ways when the all-state committee is considering who should receive that honor.”

Lee, a junior, will be back next season to help lead what the Cardinals hope is another strong defensive unit. Both she and Bruzek join rare company within this program, as the Cardinals have had just two other girls’ soccer players named all-state prior to this year.

The Cardinals finished the season with a program-best 15-3 record. It ended in heartbreak when Bruzek suffered a concussion against Sartell-St. Stephen in the 8A semifinals on October 15. The Sabres rallied from two down to win 3-2 that night before going on to punch a ticket to the Class A state tournament.

That loss was tough to take for Alexandria, but having two players recognized as all-state members is another reminder of the great season the Cardinals had.

“I think Sarah and the whole team is feeling better,” Roos said. “They’re getting to the point where we can look back on the season and be excited about all the accomplishments that we achieved without having that cloud hang over our heads with things not ending the way we wanted them to.”
