Cougars baseball: Carlos records two more shutouts
The Carlos Cougars' season-long trend of dominant pitching performances continued in back-to-back shutouts of Miltona and Urbank-Parkers Prairie.
The Cougars got eight strong innings from Ben Bruggeman in an 11-0 win over the Bombers on July 3. That came after Nate Hoelscher controlled things from the mound in a 10-0 win over East Division rival Miltona on June 29.
Bruggeman walked four but allowed just four hits in the win over Urbank-Parkers Prairie. He struck out four to keep the Bombers scoreless and allow his team to pull away in the late innings.
The Cougars led 4-0 going into the eighth inning when they blew the game open by putting up seven runs. Neil Jenzen was a big reason for that as he connected for his third grand slam of the summer. He finished the night 2-for-3 with two walks and five RBIs. Joe Snaza and Jake Tharaldson added two hits apiece, while Troy Putnam hit a home run and scored three runs for the Cougars.
Carlos used the big inning to open things up against Miltona as well. The Cougars scored four in the fourth to make it a 5-0 game and added five more in the seventh to end things early by the 10-run rule.
Nine different players had one hit apiece for Carlos. Ryan Severson added three walks, two RBIs and a run scored to his line. Brad Nyberg, Kurt Kalina and Dave Schjenken all added two RBIs apiece.
Hoelscher scattered just three hits and three walks through seven innings to pick up the win. He struck out eight. Hoelscher has yet to give up an earned run this summer in 19 innings of work. He has struck out 27 and allowed just nine hits.
With the two shutouts, Carlos lowered its team ERA to 0.95 on the season. Bruggeman has been a big part of that. He has allowed just one run and struck out 36 in a team-leading 30 innings pitched.
The Cougars were a perfect 13-0 going into their final game on the regular season schedule this past Sunday against Sauk Centre.
